Becker Education and Engagement Day 2026: Building Knowledge, Connection, and Community

A guest blog authored by Nevin Steiner, PPMD’s Adult Advisory Committee (PAAC) Becker Officer

Living with Becker muscular dystrophy looks different for everyone. Our experiences, symptoms, care needs, and goals may vary, but we share a common need for information, support, and a community that understands.

That’s what makes Becker Education and Engagement Day (BEED) so meaningful.

On October 17–18, individuals and families living with Becker, healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates came together across the country for two days of education, conversation, and connection. With in-person events in Sacramento, Portland, Orlando, St. Louis, and Washington, DC, and virtual programming, BEED brought the Becker community together to learn from professionals and the experts, those living with Becker.

As someone living with Becker and serving as the Becker Officer on PPMD’s Adult Advisory Committee (PAAC), I’m glad to see continued attention to our community’s experiences and needs.

Education, Connection, and Everyday Life With Becker

BEED explored the many dimensions of living with Becker, from the latest research and cardiac care to the relationship between dystrophin and the brain, mental wellness, and the tools to be successful while having Becker. Sessions with clinicians and researchers gave individuals and families opportunities to ask questions, build knowledge, and feel better prepared to advocate for their needs.

Just as important were conversations about everyday life. Panels featuring people living with Becker and parents and caregivers, along with sessions on employment, relationships, communicating with family and friends, pediatric care, and transitions, highlighted the questions and decisions that extend beyond medical care.

There is no single way to navigate life with Becker. Hearing from others who understand these experiences can offer new perspectives, practical ideas, and reassurance that we don’t have to figure everything out alone.

Supporting Independence at Every Stage of Life

I’m not only an adult living with Becker—I’m a husband, father, I have a fulfilling career and lead a full life. Independence is something I feel strongly about. Living with Becker shouldn’t mean giving up the activities, goals, and experiences that matter to us.

BEED explored practical ways to support independence, from physical and occupational therapy to adaptive equipment, accessible travel, home modifications, and resources for school, college, employment, and everyday life.

Our needs may change over time, but staying informed, planning ahead, and learning from others can help us find ways to keep doing the things that matter most to us. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, and no one should have to navigate these decisions alone.

PPMD and Becker

BEED is an important opportunity to connect, and support and education extend well beyond one weekend a year. PPMD offers resources for individuals living with Becker and their families at every stage of the journey.

Here are a few places to start:

  • Explore Becker resources: Visit PPMD’s What Is Becker? page for information, educational webinars, and practical resources for families.
  • Learn about care: Explore PPMD’s care resources, video library, and Becker webinar series for information on genetics, neuromuscular care, and heart and lung health.
  • Plan for adulthood: PPMD’s Adult Care page covers employment, college, daily living, adaptive equipment, relationships, clinical trials, and more.
  • Connect through PAAC: PPMD’s Adult Advisory Committee offers opportunities for education, advocacy, mentorship, and connection with other teens and adults living with Duchenne and Becker.

Staying Connected

One of the best things about BEED is realizing you’re not alone. Sometimes, just talking with someone who gets it can make a real difference. I hope we keep those conversations going, sharing what we learn and helping each other navigate life with Becker. We all have our own path, but we can make it a little easier by staying connected.
